C.U.S. has been around for over thirty years. Providing a place for women to grow as individuals. Our members not only become part of the prestigious Greek system as individual members but also as part of an organization that separates itself from the rest by providing a structure that fosters sisterhood, leadership, teamwork, consistency, responsibility, organization, ethics and morale. C.U.S. gives it's members the opportunity to heighten all the above attributes through programing, educational development mediums, and interaction with members. Most importantly, it provides them with the outlet to understand not only their own culture but the culture of all our members, preparing them for a world that is not only diverse but also complicated with different personalities.
As a national board, we understand the needs of our membership not only through constant interaction, but also from our past experiences as undergraduate members and our experiences today as professionals. We pride ourselves in our motto "Wisdom Through Education," because we are a Latina based sorority whose membership is primarily first generation college students. As an administrator you may be aware of the obstacles facing many minorities on their campus' in higher education due to cultural differences. Our organization embraces those understandings to provide a support system that encourages self development, a sense of family, and enforces the importance of education in today's society. C.U.S. helps improve retention rates amongst minorities at universities/colleges across the country by providing that support system needed that many other organizations cannot provide because of the lack of understanding basic cultural differences.
Our organization was created at a time in history when many Latina women were not given the same opportunities as men to pursue higher education. Our founders were not only part of the first co-ed graduating class attending a University that was once ALL male but also women of color in a world not yet ready to embrace them. They needed to create something that would give them the tools to be as successful as their peers and allow them to go into society as educated individuals. This was C.U.S. 30 years ago, and it remains what C.U.S. is today, an organization that supports the cultural needs of our membership and nurtures our members' desire to inspire other individuals with the same vision.
Our organization gives women the comfort of knowing they contribute to society by leaving an imprint on their campuses that will last for generations. Ask yourself, why not offer that same opportunity to your campus students? By doing so you will help to increase their gratitude for a higher education and give them the opportunity to embrace a grassroots effort to increase the number of graduating minorities in colleges and universities across the country.
