Entering college is an exciting, yet challenging time in a student’s life. It was because of these challenges, that our seven Founding Mothers decided more needed to be done for the Latina community in higher education. With the aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement still lingering, our Founders needed to be heard and feel valued as members of the university community. They knew that in order to be successful, they would need to create a support system different than what any current student organization could offer: a sense of familia (Spanish word for family). Within the Latino culture, as well as many other cultures, the emphasis of the family connection on a college campus is vital to student success (Perez and McDonough, 2008). CUS provided, and still provides, a home away from home --a sisterhood-- for our past, present and future Sisters.

The challenge and rewards of college life can be enhanced through the fraternity or sorority experience. Chi Upsilon Sigma has been in existence for 30 years. Since our inception, we have challenged our sisters to achieve great heights intellectually, personally, spiritually and socially. Our undergraduate sisters pride themselves on the individualistic and professional qualities that Chi Upsilon Sigma promotes. We offer a rich and rewarding experience for our sisters. In addition, we contribute to campus life through top notch programming, community service, and the educational ideals our founders established.

The main purpose of Chi Upsilon Sigma is to promote education, thus our motto "Wisdom through Education." We believe in fostering an atmosphere of learning, integrity, activism for equal rights, social responsibility, and respect for human dignity, while providing a positive influence, and constructive development for its members and prospective members.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR PARENTS

The following is a list of suggestions that may help ease your daughters transition to the Greek community.

---------------------------------------------------------

Be happy and supportive with your daughter's choice of sorority.

Encourage your daughter to attend programs sponsored by Greek Life Office and the Office of Student Activities.

Know the name and phone number of the chapter president, new member educator, and chapter advisor.

Ask for details about the financial aspect of membership. If you are paying, you have the right to know. Many one time dues are paid during the first year, so expect the first year to be the most expensive.

Initiation is an important time for the new initiates. Be supportive and respectful of this time for your daughter.

Talk with your daughter. Stay in touch with phone calls, letters, and care packages.

Attend the annual regional BBQ as well as special events sponsored by the chapter.

Expect to see numerous new t-shirts, photos and Greek paraphernalia.

Encourage your daughter to be a part of the University community and to take advantage of its many resources.
