Starting a chapter is an exciting process, but we’re sure you’ve got questions.  We’ve tried to answer some of the common questions here, but if you need additional assistance, please contact the Director of Expansion.

Q: How do I start a chapter of Chi Upsilon Sigma at my campus?

A: If you are interested in starting a chapter on you campus, first reach out to your Greek Life office to understand the requirements needed to bring a new organization to your school. Also, find out if organizations are currently being accepted for recognition. This is important in establishing a successful chapter that will grow for years to come.  If Greek Life supports your expansion, they will support you when you become members of Chi Upsilon Sigma. Once you have gathered the information contact our Director of Expansion. She will provide you with the steps needed to set up an information session and paperwork that is required before a chapter can be established.

Q: How long does it take for a colony to become a chapter?

A:  Once a school has reached five undergraduate members on campus, they will be granted chapter status.

Q: What kind of alumna support can a new chapter expect?

A:  All chapters are supported by their assigned/ or chosen Alumnae Advisor. Also, undergraduate chapters are supported by alumnae in the area.

Q: What kind of support would the Grand Chapter Board provide a new chapter?

A: The Grand Chapter Board provides chapters with the necessary tools needed to manage their chapters. Members of the Board volunteer to speak or coordinate activities at a number of our chapters. When a new chapter is introduced, the Grand Chapter Board ensures they have the necessary tools e.g. Alumna Advisor and governing documents in order to grow into a functioning chapter.

Q: Does the Chi Upsilon Sigma prefer to re-establish old chapters or start new ones?

A: We work on expansion and retention conjointly as both are needed for the success of our organization. All retention chapters are assigned an Area Expansion Officer to ensure those chapters have the support it needs to be revived. New chapters are considered on an individual basis; how they fit into our expansion plan.

Q: How do I know if C.U.S. exists on my campus?

A: You can view our chapter listing or contact your Greek Life/ Student Organization office to determine if we are listed as an organization on campus. Sometimes these lists are not updated so feel free to contact the Director of Expansion to ensure we do not have a chapter or if we have an interest group on your campus.

Q: Do you have to be Latina and speak Spanish to join?

A: No, you do not have to be Latina to join. We are a "Latin" organization because our founders were Latina. However, we embrace and welcome all cultures.  A large number of our membership comes from various cultures. Just like the Latino culture consists of many sub-cultures, so does our membership.

No, you do not need to speak Spanish to join; all our Latino and Non-Latino members do not speak Spanish nor read it.
